woot.com has Chumby One for $49.99 today! Retails for $120. It’s a Steal!

March 10th, 2011

Apparently a few weeks ago, Sony DASH (a wifi/internet alarm clock from SONY also running Chumby Platform) was selling for around $69 USD on woot.

Well, today we have the Chumby One for around $50.

Could this be because of the Apple iPad2 coming out tomorrow? Perhaps. ;)

chumby_one__Smart_Internet_Companionxi8Standard.jpg

It’s very interesting to note the price at which Chumby One’s are selling. They go normally for around $130 on the chumby store.

At around $50, this deal today was a very compelling offer both for mass consumers looking to a “smart” internet connected device (and for most people that will mean a radio and/or alarm clock).

For $50, it was also a deal for hacker market.

Hope Chumby made some dough to continue to roll out some products/services this year.

What is the Chumby?

Chumby takes your favorite parts of the internet and delivers them to you in a friendly, always-on, always-fresh format. It’s a window into your internet life that lives outside your desktop, so content like weather, news, celebrity gossip, podcasts, music, and more has a place to play away from your world of documents and spreadsheets. Just plug in your chumby, connect to your wireless network, and use your computer to create a lineup of favorites from over 1,500 apps in more than 30 categories, with new ones arriving all the time. Then let your chumby do its thing streaming everything you like, from sports scores to stock quotes, from video clips to interactive games, from photos to trivia.

where does a chumby belong?
By your bed: Fall asleep to a favorite internet music station; wake up to a zen gong, a news podcast, or Pandora Radio.

In the kitchen: Consult your Google Calendar in the morning, check the weather, and cook to streaming internet music.

On your desk: Watch your photos stream by, follow your friends on Facebook or Twitter, or get alerted to that craigslist find you’ve been waiting for.

What you must provide to make the chumby work:
Broadband internet connection. The internet connection needs to be highspeed, such as cable or DSL. chumby will not work with a dial-up connection.
Wireless router or wired ethernet connection. Wireless: chumby is compatible with most wireless routers with the settings of 802.11g/802.11b (or mixed).

Most routers currently sold offer these settings. Routers that mention 802.11n may work with the chumby as long as they properly support 802.11g or 802.11b. Wired ethernet: chumby works with most USB ethernet adapters.

Computer. You need access to a computer to activate your chumby as well as set up the apps you want to show on it.

Once your chumby is set up, you only need occasional access to a computer if you want to change the apps that play on your chumby.

You don’t have to buy a subscription or membership or anything else extra to access content for your chumby.

chumby works with the following types of personal encryption:

WEP 64 (WEP 40): Open, Shared, Mixed/Auto
WEP 128: Open, Shared, Mixed/Auto
WPA-PSK: TKIP, AES, AES/TKIP Mixed
WPA2-PSK: TKIP, AES, AES/TKIP Mixed
WPA/WPA2 Mixed

The chumby currently does not support enterprise encryption. Many workplaces use enterprise encryption, which may prevent wireless devices like the chumby from connecting. Talk to your network administrator if you’re thinking about using a chumby at work.

USB Ethernet Adapter Information:
Don’t have access to a wireless signal? You can plug a USB ethernet adapter into your chumby and connect it to any ethernet cable. chumby works with most USB ethernet adapters. To see a list of adapters we’ve specifically tested on chumby, go to tested USB ethernet adapters.

New firmware update to SONY Dash (1.7.1304) – brings Hulu Plus support

November 15th, 2010

There’s a new firmware update for the device to 1.7.1304, from 1.7.1254.

Since the Sony Dash personal internet viewer hit the scene earlier this year, we’ve heard many of you say that video streaming has become a favorite feature for on the vivid 7-inch screen. Starting today the content available for watching episodes of the latest TV shows is about to go through the roof with the addition of Hulu Plus.

Hulu Plus is a subscription service that will allow you to access one of the deepest libraries of current and classic TV shows available online on your Sony Dash device. You can get everything from the latest versions of Glee, Modern Family and The Office to many golden oldies. Hulu Plus is a paid service and costs $9.99 per month.

Starting today, Dash owners will be prompted with an option to update their software to 1.7.1304A. The update will add an option for Hulu Plus and deliver other improvements like a faster interface, simplified alarm setup menus, additional categories in the Dashboard theme and more.

If you add Hulu Plus to your Sony Dash, let us know what you think, how you’ve customized it and where in your home or office you find it the most useful for viewing bits of the web and now your favorite shows from Hulu.

I also noticed the price has dropped from $199 to $169.

Flash Lite 4 coming to Chumby Platform

November 14th, 2010

Flash Lite 4 is coming to Chumby Platform. It’s good news to those who are developing for the Chumby, yet are also developing for Flash 10.1 instead of Flash Lite, now.

Effectively, then means developers can now target Chumby widgets written in ActionScript 3.0, instead of ActionScript 2.0.

We are in the QA phase for Flash Lite 4 on Chumby devices, so it should be available there fairly soon.

We do not currently support H.264 video decode in the Flash Lite player – most implementations on the low powered processors use hardware decode, and the processors in our low-end devices do not have a video accelerator core.
